Is understanding C++ completely a requirement to having a successful career in computer science?

I have been taking Computer Science courses since the summer (1 in the summer which was an intro to c++) and now I'm taking an advanced course in c++ and another programming course. I am still confused with much of the coding etc. Do you need to use c++ through out all of your c++ education and throughout your career? What are some good career options in computer science that do not stress c++? Sounds maybe like a silly question for people who "get it", so maybe you can shed some light on this topic for me. Thanks

you don't have to have studied C++ to know it. If you are proficent with similar programming languages like Java, Perl, Jscript, php, python, etc you already know a lot of C++. I personally feel that somone who has 2+ years of experience working as a Java developer probably can handle a job as a C++ programmer better than someone fresh out of college who has only taken classes in C++.

Reply:If you plan on getting a job as a C++ developer your doing it right. C++ is a very strong skill to have and easy to find work with.





I have a friend that just left our company, he's a C++ expert - many years of experience, he's billing 200 per hour, 50+ hours a week as a contractor.





Of course since you don't have any Java, C# experience you won't be getting a job doing any of those.





I would add some Java courses and some Linux OS classes to your list since you are just starting out.
